Family in Quotation Marks

10pm Playtime

Today was packed. My husband had to work the first part of the day so I was flying solo with BC. Fine except I had to make a cake, muffins, pasta salad, and a fruit platter all before noon. Thankfully, one of my awesome sisters-in-law came over to lend a hand. I was able to get everything made and even got a shower! Then it was off to the races!

BC and I went to a picnic (his first!) then came back home for dad and headed to a friend's birthday party where we stayed there a couple of hours. Our final destination that evening was a party in celebration of the birthdays of two of my honorary uncles. Upon arrival BC was immediately whisked all over the party to meet everyone.

Many of the folks there had met my parents before I was born so had know me all my life and now, as it goes, they were meeting my son. These people are my "family", you see. "Family" in quotation marks because they are not related to me by blood, only by time and memories. I grew up going to their houses and having them come to ours. I grew up at their knees, listening to stories of the time when they all were young together. I grew up with their music and laughter lulling me to sleep. And all of that adds up to family.

BC will grow up as part of this family. He will be woven into this tapestry of friendship community just as I was. And I am so grateful for that. As we were leaving and saying our goodbyes I thought about how these people are tied so intrinsically to me and my history. As we were leaving and saying our goodbyes I realized just how lucky we are to be surrounded by so much love. And what better gift could I ever give my child than that?

Oh little man
It's 10pm
We have had a long couple of days
I am soooo tired.
You slept quite heavily all day
Now as I’m ready to rest
 You are ready to play.
